Straw and pellet bedding
For the good of everyone
Here we focus on the production of straw pellets – an innovative product which combines the benefits of long straw bedding with other benefits and compensates for the drawbacks. These pellets offer several benefits, from improved storage and handling to efficient use as a fertiliser after use in the barn. Their high absorbency (over 400% of their own weight and almost 12x more than long straw) allows them to soak up urine easily. The integration of such innovations into the automated feeding systems specially developed by companies like TEWE is a step towards better animal welfare and more efficient operational processes in agriculture.
The feed is stored in the systems and automatically dispensed in predetermined quantities according to the set schedule. This ensures a consistent and controlled supply of feed. From reception to feeding and for different types of roughage – for example straw, straw pellets, or maize silage – they boast variable and precise dosing at the roughage station or conveyor chain. They are available in custom sizes.
In conclusion
The integration of innovative products such as straw pellets and automated feeding systems into farming operations offers several benefits in terms of animal welfare, efficiency and the environment. With precise dosing, improved hygiene and the ability to flexibly adjust to the animals’ needs, these innovations help make modern animal farming more sustainable and efficient.
Benefits
- Less workload: Automated feeding reduces workload, saving time and resources in the process.
- Precise feed dosing: Dosing feed in precise quantities and at precise times ensures equal feed distribution and reduces waste.
- Hygiene and animal health: Closed systems and minimal contamination improve hygiene in barns and thus the health of the animals.
- Flexibility in feed composition: The option to adjust the ratios of different feed components allows flexible adaptation to the needs of the animals.
- Improved welfare: Automated straw showers improve the animals’ wellbeing by dispensing fresh straw or similar fibrous materials for rummaging and playing.
Features
Efficient storage and handling of structural pellets:
The pellets are germicidal, water-binding and odour-binding, which makes them easier to store and handle.
Versatile:
After use in the barn, the pellets can be used as a fertiliser, for compost, or in biogas plants.
Automated feeding systems:
TEWE offers fully automated feeding systems which integrate roughage and pellet bedding. These enable a controlled supply of roughage and are available in various sizes to suit any farm.
Playful integration of straw bedding:
Automated scattering of straw via straw showers improves the wellbeing of the animals and allows the customer to flexibly adjust the scattering frequency.
Straw bedding
Straw bedding is both a feed rich in raw fibre and a species-appropriate bedding. The goal of its use in the pen is to introduce or maintain additional humane husbandry conditions for pigs and other animals, such as cattle, poultry birds, and horses. As well as more space, animals now often receive a straw shower which scatters fresh straw or other roughage for rummaging or playing into the pen several times a day. The bedding material is processed automatically by the feeding computer and can be scattered via chain haulage or airflow. The customer decides how often and at what times the bedding is scattered. Any adjustments can be made in an easy, uncomplicated manner on the feeding computer.
Straw bedding benefits:
- better animal health thanks to improved gut health
- less stress among the animals
